PREVIEW OF THE SDCC SKETCHBOOKS AT PULP'S ART

Hello readers, this year there's a bumper crop of sketch books from this summer's US convention season. Several artists who didn't release books last year - such as Frank Cho, Dean Yeagle, etc. - are back in print with new collections this time around.

We expect to receive these books to sell in August but from next week you'll be able to call in here and review an example of some of the best of them and reserve copies for when the stock arrives.

ENRIQUE FERNANDEZ' BRIGADA IS HERE!

Hola amigos, with Pulp's Art due to end with the summer we're not bringing in all the new titles we once would have and generally those we do will be in smaller quantities but there will be exceptions and right here is one.

ENRIQUE FERNANDEZ: BRIGADA # 1
HC 48pp Color
AME Ediciones
If a tale of Dwarfs on a quest sounds vaguely familiar then let me assure you that when the writer artist of the tale is master draftsman and story spinner Enrique Fernandez then you will be off the beaten track, in uncharted and envigorating territory.
Brigada is a new project from the artist behind such hits as Aurore, L'ile sans Sourire, Les contes de l'ére du Cobra, Le Magician d'Oz and La Mére des Victoires but unlike these others it is self published courtesy of the funds submitted by fans and enthusiasts to finance the project.
What this means is Brigada wont appear in your local book store and will only be available in select outlets, given the print run is only 4000 books world wide.
Pulp's Art is happy to be able to offer this exclusive book by an artist we like and admire, we have both French and English versions available.

SKETCH BOOKS AT PULP'S ART

Hello readers, normally I'd be at the San Diego Comic Con today buying lots of great books for the store but I'm still here in Paris because as you probably now know the store will change after the summer and eventually close down.

BUT don't be too blue because Pulp's co owner Arno is State side right now collecting the best books for the shop, so I can go out on a high, so to speak.
Yes at some point next month we'll have all the great books enthusiasts would want us to have from their favorite artists, from arguably the world's most important pop culture event.

We even have the first of the San Diego Comic Con books in the store right now, did we use the "Tardis", how is it possible?
Check it out,

SIMONE BIANCHI SDCC 2013 SKETCH BOOK
SC 38pp Color Black + White
Simone Bianchi
One of Marvel's original exotic European signings, Simone has tackled all of that company's coolest characters and Wolverine. Right now he's illustrating the Intergalactic megalomaniac with a penchant for shinny hand ware, Thanos.
This neat book featuring lots of images in various states of finish is limited to just 650 copies.

(Those who like Simone's very original take on classic comic characters will be pleased to read we still have available a few of his previous SDCC exclusive sketch books.)

So come to Pulp's Art before the Legend is History!

HERE FOR THE SUMMER!

Hello readers, so Pulp's Art will continue as it is selling the best in illustration at least until some time in September.

This means I'm still on the scene, like a sellin' machine, until that time.

Also, we'll be getting some new titles in before we bring down the curtain, so keep checking back here please and don't forget we're offering incredible bargains on excellent titles!

Well, I sincerely hope this makes some of you a bit happier,
Nick.

GOING BUT NOT GONE, SO WHY NOT COME ON IN?

Hello readers, not so many of these missives from me to go but before they do let me tell you why it's still a good idea to drop in on our unique book store.

So, right there there's the fact we are unique, other book shops may carry some of the titles we do but only we carry such an extensive selection of self published art books and sketch books, as well as the best in gaming, animation and comic art and on top of that we've historical, animal, aviation, military and Western - as in the old American frontier - art.

Also, there is the chance to pick up some real bargains, not beaten up scrappy old books but good as new top titles, reduced because we were a tad too enthusiastic in our ordering, a bit like our expectations for the store, doh!

Anyway, don't think I'm sitting here crying into my beer feeling low, that's not how we do it where I'm from, so just drop in to bid me adieu and to grab a bargain before we're but a bitter sweet memory.

BREAKING BAD NEWS!

Hello readers, it's with regret that I write Pulp's Art will change in the weeks ahead and will eventually close its doors permanently.

I think we gave it a good go but in the final analysis there isn't sufficient support to warrant the use of resources this book shop requires, so I'll be leaving towards the end of July and I imagine shortly after that the focus of the shop will be changing.

I'm grateful to have had this opportunity in retailing and pleased that in our two and a bit years of being open Pulp's Art has sold some beautiful books to some nice people. Thanks to all of you who bought a book here or said something complimentary about the store, your patronage was greatly appreciated by me.

Pulp's Comics will continue to make the best in artist's sketchbooks and self published art books available ; before closing Pulp's Art will be discounting most of the stock in the shop, offering some really great bargains on some very good books, so come on in to hear the Fat Lady singing!

NEW AT PULP'S ART JUNE 26

Hello readers, so what's arrived this week, well Art of World War Z didn't! Yeah our supplier's minions confused it with War Machine, I could make some pun about zombies getting the last word or moan but in fairness they generally do a terrific job so I'll forgo the cheap laugh.

Anyway check this out,

JOHN BYRNE'S FANTASTIC FOUR AE ED
HC 168pp Black + White

OK, we know what to expect from an Artist's Edition by now, a facsimile of the original page true in every detail, scanned from the original and reprinted at the same size.
John Byrne is a fan favorite and reprinted here is what he did between X-Men and Next Men, why it's his run on Marvel's first family the Fantastic Four.
This book reprints #s 232, 241, 243, 247, 261 and What If # 36, you also get bonus original art, character studies and covers.
Sure to be a popular book so call in or contact us to ensure your copy!

SUMMER WARS MATERIAL BOOK

Udon Entertainment
Most of what you want to know about this award winning film, from Mad House studios, can be found in this book.
An ordinary family is put to the test to avert a catastrophe in cyber space, you get all the visual development art for characters and settings for this story and an in depth interview with the director in this nicely produced book.

Finally two exhibitions are about to debut here in Paris that are sure to thrill fans of illustration, Galerie Arludick will be presenting a selection of work from Imaganism Studio's incredibly talented Boby Chiu and Kei Acedera, while at Galerie Daniel Maghen an amazing roster of artists will be paying homage to their favorite movies.

NEW PRICING ON KIM JUNG GI'S SKETCHBOOKS!

Hello readers, I've been vexed for some time about the pricing of Kim's books and had discussed with our supplier, Kim's European agent, the whole issue.

Well finally we have an understanding, in fairness to Kim's agent, Kim is setting the prices with little regard for the needs of a bricks and mortar book store, or international freight costs.
What this means is our in store price has come down to reflect the agent's obligation to respect Kim's demands.

So, it's not so good for us given our original pricing was the standard margin a French book store would make selling books from a domestic supplier but then these are unique books from a unique talent so it's great news for you, the consumer!

Now, I know there's a new book from Kim and yes this will be available from Pulp's Art in the near future, watch this space!

MAN OF STEEL!

Hello readers, Warner and DC have a lot riding on the latest adaptation of Superman's origins and happily initial reports would suggest they've conjured up a winner, courtesy of the fan's dream director/producer team of Zack -300- Snyder and Christopher -Dark Knight- Nolan.

This great looking book, showcases the amazing production design for this lavish production, which synthesized the Superhero and SF mediums into an epic spectacle.

NEW AT PULP'S ART JUNE 19

Hello readers, well Star Trek Into Darkness proved to be cracking entertainment, one hopes that the whit, energy and entertainment JJ Abrams and his team brought to this grand daddy of SF franchises can last through to their endeavours to rejuvenate Star Wars.

And so to this week's new books and it was only a couple of week's back we announced a great looking new art book for a terrific new game and yet here's another,

ART OF THE LAST OF US
HC 184pp Color Black + White
Dark Horse
The new game from the mischievous mutts at Naughty Dog studio sees a pandemic having broken out across the globe and it's turning people into decidedly unmagical mushrooms, terrifying fanged fungi mutants in fact. You'll play this game as a couple - comprising of a middle aged man, Joel and a young women, Ellie - needing to traverse an even more ravaged and paranoid USA than normal in the hope of locating sanctuary.
Dark Horse have already brought you gorgeous game art books for Mass Effect, Remember Me, Bioshock and Dragon Age and this book is right up there with the best of them for its quality of images and design, which combines aspects of The Road, Mad Max and Resident Evil, from what will clearly be a terrifying and compelling gaming experience.

OK we stick with a ravaged and plagued world with,

WALKING DEAD POSTER COLLECTION
HC 40pp Color
Insight Editions
40 large poster sized pages can easily be taken from this book and placed where ever you need an image to scare the dickens out of your self and fellow Zombie/Walker fans.
All the principal characters are featured from the first 3 series of the hit TV show, based upon the top selling comic book series, Walking Dead and there are some promo posters to round out the package.

(NB. We have a similar collection for the excellent Game of Thrones series.)

Last but no means the least of the arrivals is the latest collection of,

FLASH GORDON THE FALL OF MING
HC 200pp Color
Titan Books
The latest in the to be comprehensive reprinting of Alex Raymond's SF masterpiece covers the years 1941-44, when these classic stories must have served as a welcome distraction from the suffering of WWII.
Flash, Dale and Doctor Zhivago - wasn't it - are still stuck on the planet Mongo, where Emperor Ming is still being merciless!

Finally the fear of the leak we experienced a few weeks back is gone and we're returning books to those shelves but in a departure from before, we're having two new sections, our copublished Trinquétte books and a selection of bargin books, the latter being great books but now at great prices.

Tune in next week, when I hope to announce the arrival of John Byrne's Fantastic Four Artist's Edition!

NEW AT PULP'S ART JUNE 12

Hi readers, new this week at the boutique for beau books here in the City of Lights, are the following.

The essence of great comedy is - pause for effect - timing and look what we have now, a few week's after the artist has left Paris!

ASHLEY WOOD MACHINE SABBATH
HC 48pp Color
IDW
The work of Ashley is always dynamic but here you get Ash with a dash
of "action art", that or he simply got carried away depicting the numerous nubile nymphs in these paintings and sketches, from his first fine-art gallery show at the Jonathen Levine gallery in NYC.
It both is and isn't the Ashley art we know, it's his stuff OK but unrestrained by any direct commercial or client related constraints.

Now to something all about commercial concerns and yet likely to be of significant artistic merit and a lot of fun, it's

ART OF MONSTER UNIVERSITY
HC 167pp Color Black + White
Chonicle Books
The latest film from Pixar, yes that animation studio with 24 Academy awards, whose films have made a staggering $5 billion, reintroduces Mark and Sully in a welcome return to the world of Monsters, of all shape and stripe.
This art book gives you all you would want and expect from an "Art of ..", color guides, character studies, storyboards and a raft load of development art.

If you like animation art then you'll want to know that we have a few of Oscar Martin's Tom & Jerry sketchbooks, a very nicely self produced book by the Spanish artist of research work he made featuring these popular characters.

Our last book is a welcome addition to the popular books by Ben Caldwell,

DARE DETECTIVE MISFITS' MANUEL
48pp Color Black + White
Ben Caldwell
I know anyone who has bought one of Ben's books has come back happy and usually for more, so it's good we now have this new book from him. The DD Misfits' Manuel is a heavily illustrated color guide to all the stupendously rich back ground material for Ben's Dare Detective story and its setting of Ebrinor.
Prepare to be sucked into the hyper active imagination of an excellent artist and the zany yet credible world he's created!

Before I go and monkey around a bit more here in the store, yes we're still waiting on getting the roof and various pipes fixed, so I have to put stuff here and there so it doesn't sit out of sight in the office, let me tell you we have had these great books come back into stock,

Tune into this blog spot each day for further details about discounted titles for Pulp's Day (PD) and be sure to get back here Friday afternoon when I'll be making an important announcement about PD.

ABOUT PULP'S DAY &..

Hi readers, so as I wrote yesterday we will be having a special event across the Pulp's stores on Saturday 15th.
At Pulp's Comics they will be slashing the prices on selected back issues and graphic novels, at Pulp's Toys they'll be doing the same on toys and collectibles and we'll be discounting lots of items here at Pulp's Art.

It's an opportunity you wont want to miss and to maintain every one's focus, both ourselves and Pulp's Comics will be posting on our blogs some of the selected items on work days leading up to PULP'S DAY!

Today's featured item is,

Francisco Herrera's Magic Box yours for 20€ assuming you come along on to the store on Saturday 15th.

Finally please note that we are selling these great books right now,

ENKI BILAL MECANHUMANIMAL
HC 96pp Color
Casterman
An art book in which Mr Bilal revisits certain of his iconic creations, using mixed techniques and occasional photographic imagery, a gorgeous looking book by one of the mediums titans.

TEMUDJIN
HC 103pp Color
DM Editions
Gallery owner Daniel Maghen is passionate about BD, so much so that he occasionally publishes them. His latest release is the tale of a special boy born on the unforgiving steppes of central Asia some centuries ago.
The boy has amazing powers and is guided in the use of his gifts by a willy shamanic guardian.
Carrion employs a simple but stunningly effective style both in composition and coloring to illustrate the intriguing tale by Ozanam.

NEW AT PULP'S ART JUNE 6

Hi readers, something for all tastes again this week and we kick off with a real treat, not one but two new issues of, Illustrators Quarterly,

ILLUSTRATORS QUARTERLY
SC 94pp Color Black + White
Book Palace
This British response to the excellent American publication, Illustration is every bit as good as it's cousin across the "pond".
Each issue focuses attention on top notch illustrators from back when magazines and books contained gorgeous illustration, with informative essays and generous helping of the artist's work.
In these two new issues, we have a classy piece on David Wright's toffee nosed totty in issue # 2 while # 3 pays it's respects to the master of historical illustration, Fortunino Matania.
These are just the high lights, there are many more worthy artists and features to be discovered in each issue of this highly recommended title.

I'm pleased to say the principal artist from this next book dropped by the store recently and picked up a few titles,

ART OF REMEMBER ME
HC 184pp Color Black + White
Dark Horse
Sounding like a Christopher Nolan film the premise of Remember Me is that of a memory hunter and trader who has had her own memory swiped, so she's got as much idea about her past as a serial spliff smoker but this isn't a film it's Capcom's new game.
So, the setting is Neo Paris in the year 2084, dangers, human and high tech lerk around every corner and the game is certain to be a rush, though of course what you want to know is that this book is brimming with interesting art work covering every aspect of the game and rendered by a team led by ace artist Aleksi Briclot.
This is from the publisher which brought you the amazing Art of Mass Effect and more recently Bioshock, so you know you wont be wasting your time or money with Dark Horse and Aleksi Briclot involved; now have I forgotten to mention anything?

We stay on the back of Dark Horse and continue riding round Paris with our next book,

VICTORIA FRANCES: LISTY CIRCUS
HC 80pp Color
Dark Horse
Whoa that's a chap on the cover, name of Shasha, anyway he's had a run of bad luck leading right up to the clown costume and the circus but will his luck change when he meets an equally saucer eyed sorceress?
You'll have to buy this book written and illustrated by one of Gothdom's favorite creators, Victoria Frances.

Finally our last title this week lowers the tone to a point where I feel I should warn our high brow readers to disengage with this review right now because here comes,

JOHN K PRESENTS: SPUMCO COMIC BOOK
HC 160pp Color Black + White
IDW
Back in the 1990s a "touched" genius and a team of talented animators created " The Ren & Stimpey Show" for Nicelodeon and television animation was never quite the same again. That genius was John Kircfalusi, the show was as wacky and out there as was John himself and eventually - as things got stranger and weirder - Nicelodeon and John parted ways.
Still, what John did next was this, a series of comic books every bit as noxiously hilarious as Ren & Stimpey and now collected into one book by IDW and with additional material.
For those who find the functioning and malfunctioning of the body funny, this is the book for you as things which should have been scooped and bagged or flushed feature strongly along with a cast including the slack jawed idiot, Jimmy and his half pint red neck uncle, George.
The stories aren't always savory and they're certainly not subtle but John with pals like Shane Glines, Jim Smith and Rich Pursel sure did funny stuff and in a rich visual style recalling the animated shows of the 50s and early 60s.
Now wash your hands!

SATURDAY JUNE 15 WILL BE PULP'S DAY!

"Pulp's Day, what's that Nick?" Well, across the three Pulp's stores, count 'em, Art, Comics and Toys we'll be deep discounting selected items and not just slow stuff or books caught in last week's deluge, oh no top sellers in prime condition are making the list.
Between now and the 15th all the store's blog spots will be teasing you with items and their price, this is an unrepeatable offer, these items at these prices will be available in the store while stock lasts on the 15th and only on the 15th so please mark the calender now!

To give you an idea of what to expect how do you like the sound of J Scott Campbell's White Hot and Marvelous at 15€ each, that's like 50% off!

So I hope to see you on the 15th, I believe everybody will go home very happy.

Stay tuned for this week's new arrivals, I'll be posting them soon!

NEW LOOK?

Hello readers, well yesterday Paris experienced rain such as Noah must have witnessed and despite us having 5 intervening floors between us and the rains point of contact with our building, somehow much of that rain found its way from the roof directly through our ceiling and onto three of our book cases!

Quick work saved most of the books from the deluge but for the time being I have three book cases out of commission, making the back of the shop look a tad forlorn.
Obviously we hope to have them back in service quickly but until repairs have been made to our roof, I can't risk putting stock on them.
Sorry for any inconvenience this causes, those looking for the Asian animation books and the BD can ask me about titles, because the stock is sitting in a nice warm spot out of harms way.

I'll close this post with the express hope Summer answers its call next month!

NEW AT PULP'S ART MAY 30

Hello readers, quite a lot to like in this week's new releases and we'll take off with,

ANGRY BIRDS: HATCHING A UNIVERSE
HC162pp Color Black + White
Insight Editions
The phenomenal success of this game franchise is another one of those that passed this old duffer by as I like traditional media and means of communication. So what I know is that what started out as a game for mobiles and such from Finland has become a world wide hit, spawning all the spin offs enterprise can think off and oh yeah the characters are all irritable birds.
Anything else I might want to know about past, present and future for the cranky chicks and their franchise I can find in this coffee table art book, dedicated to the feathered fiends from Espoo Finland!

And we're stuck with crazy fauna again in,

THE RESURRECTIONIST: THE LOST WORK OF Dr SPENCER BLACK
HC 192pp Color, Black + White
Quirck Books
Well this is certainly an original oddity in which the actual author E.B. Hudspeth imagines the lost journals and research of a Doctor Black, a scientist of the mid 19th century convinced that mythical creatures were in fact evolutionary steps on humanities journey to today's specimens.
The book is the biography of Dr Black's strange life and his  weirder research including detailed and oddly beautiful anatomical studies of mermaids, satyrs, minotaurs etc., you haven't read or seen anything quite like this!

A  very welcome addition to our shelves is,

JEFFREY JONES THE DEFINITIVE REFERENCE
HC or SC 208pp Color Black + White
Vanguard Productions
Vanguard follow up their definitive reference of Frank Frazett's works with this volume dedicated to another master of heroic fantasy, Jeffrey Jones.
That Jones would venture off from illustration and comic strip work to pursuit fine art was hardly surprising given the subtlety of his work, which was as much informed by masters of the impressionist movement as it was by the giants of the Brandywine School of Illustration but at the height of his commercial success he was as much sort after as Frazetta, himself an enthusiastic admirer of Jones' work.
This full run down of the artist's published work is profusely illustrated and in addition there are essays and tributes by collectors, collaborators and friends to this extraordinarily talented artist.

So, I'm hoping to receive some more books but I don't want to tempt fate and so I'll just post this for now but keep watching this space please.

Oh, and any readers in Germany should know we've a significant presence at the Munchen Comic Festival these next 4 days, including having Daniela Uhlig signing her new book with us, Sugar Girls over the weekend.  CHEERS!

NEW AT PULP'S ART 23 MAY

Hello readers, quite a bit to get through this week so without further ado, it's,

ELRIC # 1
HC 64pp Color
Glenat
You might feel another comic adaptation of Michael Moorcock's celebrated albino, wizard prince, Elric wasn't really necessary. As Moorcock makes clear in his introduction to this new interpretation there have been several previous adaptations and if one also considers those illustrators who have imagined the character for the novel's covers then we are in the company of some seriously good artists.
Yet this new treatment ranks as the author's favorite to date and it's probably because this creative team aren't pulling their punches in their depiction of the character and his world, this is Elric and Melnibone as Morcoock envisaged it, majestic and monstrously cruel.
If you like the dynamic and epic art style of Matthieu Lauffrey you are certain to like what Poli, Recht and Bastide are doing here and you get additional character studies and development art, along with portraits by top illustrators, to round out this impressive debut volume.

We stay this side of the Atlantic as we review the latest in a top series of art books,

CFSL. NET # 7
SC 302pp color Black + White
Cafe Sale/Ankama
The latest showcase of the best artwork from animators, BD and game artists served up during this past year on the Cafe Sale site, the francophone web page for displaying digital art.
Like Spectrum some of the work is commissions for professional projects and some of it is work done for the artist's pleasure in their down time and now printed in this gorgeous book for our pleasure!

And still we stay here, to review another French title and the cultural high point of this week's review,  ahem clears throat..

PAUL & GAETAN BRIZZI: OPERA

Recently Daniel Maghen's gallery hosted an exhibition of Paul and Gaetan Brizzi's depictions of scenes from the most celebrated Operas. A catalogue was produced to celebrate the occasion and we're fortunate to have some of the 500 copy print run of this handsome publication.
The Brizzi's have been working in animation, creating wonderful art in pencil to inspire and guide their colleagues in the visual team's endeavours to capture and create beautiful art specific to a particular time and place.
As well as featuring all the finished pieces from the show, the book also features development art for images the brothers decided to adapt or change.
The brothers are masters of location, atmosphere and emotion and their style is ideally suited to capture the high drama of the greatest moments from the best loved Operas.

So to close this selection of wonders from here, we keep to the theme of fabulous pencil work as we consider,

STAR WARS STORYBOARDS THE PREQUEL TRILOGY
HC 352pp Black + White
Abrams
OK for some this will be the wrong trilogy, such is thier attachment to the first three films which are of course the second installment!? Frankly I'm baffled by a lot of George's choices on the whole Star Wars project and not just getting the story back to front!?
Anyway, what you need to know is some incredibly talented people worked on sequencing the action for these films, including Iain McCaig and Ralph Damaggio. The commentary from the artists give a fascinating insight into how they approach the process of imagining a scene and how they interact with their fellow film makers.

We'll end with a couple of books featuring art from way back in the day,

THE ALLURING ART OF MARGRET BRUNDAGE
SC 128pp Color Black + White
Vanguard
The images might seem camp and kitsch to us but in their day these were revolountinary images, pushing the boundaries of what was permissible even in the pulps and all the more remarkable for that epoch they were by a woman.
The original queen of the pulps, Margret Brundage provided Weird Tales and other pulps anthologies some of their most memorable covers, including the first ever depiction of Howard's Conan.
Her life story was as colorful as her art, she was married to a radical and she spent her life pushing against conservative tendencies and to broaden acceptance of ideas which had yet to come into vogue.

Finally, a new book of early work by a popular artist with the customers here,

WALLY WOOD EERIE TALES OF CRIME & HORROR
SC 208pp Color
Vanguard
They forgot to mention war in the title! Anyway this is the companion volume to the same teams earlier collection of Wally Wood's non EC publisged science fiction comics, "Strange Worlds of Science Fiction".
So here we have genre stories by Wally Wood produced for publishers other than EC. It isn't Wally's best work but even on a bad day he was better than many and this book is a must have for completests.

Keep out of the rain here at Pulp's Art!
