SAN DIEGO SKETCHBOOKS PART 3 CONTINUED!

So I'm back to inform you of the new books just arrived in store which we purchased on our recent trip to the San Diego Comic Con.

It's time to meet the boys from Brazil and no they're not some old Nazis who escaped their just deserts by high tailing it to Latin America but a delightful duo of talented artist.

MARCELO DIBURROS: SKETCHBOOK # 1
SC 52pp Black + White
Marcelo Diburros
Highly detailed pen and ink drawings of all sorts of stuff and a small comic strip by a talented professional illustrator.
Some of the grotesques he depicts have the ring of Bill Plympton about them, er that's in the respect they look a little like Bill's style not they look like Bill, 'kay?

GUSTAVO DUARTE: BIRDS
SC 36pp Black + White
Gustavo Duarte
We came across Gustavo at the New York Comic Con last year and snapped up some of his excellent text free comic book Taxi.
Birds, his latest creation, is again a cleverly constructed text free story drawn in a classic animation style but this time the humor is a lot darker, as two feathered friends try and outwit the grim reaper - yeah him again - will they survive, pop along to Pulp's Art to find out?

JOSE LOPEZ: MARIACHI SAMURAI II
HC + Slipcase 72pp Color, Black + White
Jose Lopez
We've been selling Jose's art books for some time now and ever since he first used this enigmatic title and revealed some of the characters people have been wanting more.
Finally that wait is over and the first two stories of samurai swordplay south of the border are featured in this new book.
Jose has been an animation professional designing characters for over 10 years, he is currently leading the team behind Transformers Prime.
You can find his original art book Mariachi Samurai and its follow up 4.00 AM at Pulp's Art.

SEAN GALLOWAY: CHEEKS STILL TOGETHER
HC 140pp Color
SEAN GALLOWAY
Each year Sean's books keep getting bigger, we guess it's to keep pace with the burgeoning number of concepts he keeps dreaming up.
His many fans will get a generous slice of what I'm calling his Trans Pacific style, its not American or Japanese but uniquely between the two, pure Cheeks.
3/4 of the book is never before seen artwork much of it based around his own concepts, Gumshoes 4 Hire, Bastion'S 7 and Urbanazian.

RYAN BENJAMIN: PANCRATIA ROUND 3
HC 83pp Color, Black + White
Ryan Benjamin
This title deserves the widest possible audience, I think Ryan's designs for his near future adventure are very strong - bringing to mind the work of Tanaka Tatsuyuki - and the story is compelling enough that I for one want to see a whole lot more.
In each book you get pages of comic art telling the post apocalyptic story, character studies and informative pieces about 3D modeling of characters, settings and vehicles for the web version.

JONBOY MYERS: SCRIBBLE
SC 32pp Color
Jonboy Myers
A nice little package full of images of superheroes and heroines from comic book and video game artist Jonboy Myers.
We are often asked if there's a sketch book by Brazilian sensation Joe Madureira and sadly there isn't, there is Art of Darksiders mind, anyway in the absence of a book by Joe why not check out Jonboy's book, he's really good.

SIMONE BIANCHI: SAN DIEGO 2011 SKETCHBOOK
SC 36pp Color, Black + White
Simone Bianchi
Simone brings something unique to the Americanized world of superheroes a European sensibility, they just look different and fresh when he draws them.
For such a nice feller Marvel have lately had him illustrating rather extreme versions of their characters, a super violent Thor and the relentlessly violent Uncanny X-Force.
This nicely produced book features commissions for collectors and research work for his major recent projects.

BRANDON PETERSON: ILLUSTRATIONS 2011
SC 52pp Color, Black + White
Brando Peterson
A nice selection of commissions by comic artist Brandon Peterson featuring a host of the more celebrated heroes from the comic and fantasy pantheon.
Brandon's style is clean, clear and highly detailed, statuesque girls are a specialty.

SAN DIEGO SKETCHBOOKS PART 3

Since I last wrote about our San Diego purchases we did - as predicted - sell out of certain titles, you can still call in and reserve copies of J. Scott Campbell's Monster Green, Blue Beauties, White Hot and Marvelous all of which will be heading our way soon, along with other great books served up by our pal Alberto of Brandstudio Press, you know they'll be worth the wait.

Still, as the sages recommend one should never dwell too long in the past or the future because the present is the only reality - it also sounds like a gift, PRESENT -so make the most of this amazing selection of books which - in the words of Fat Boy Slim - are right here, right now, right here, right now...

DAVID COLMAN: ANIMAL CHARACTER DESIGN: GRIZZILY BEARS
HC 68pp Color, Black + White
David Colman
Emmy award winning animator David Colman is a passionate man on a mission, that mission being he wants you to have fun drawing animals. And to help David is the author of one of our best selling books The Art of Animal Character Design and now he's added this new volume about drawing Bears.
David's particular strength is imbuing animals with characteristics and expressions which bring a dramatic element to the image be it of a cute cub or a fearsome adult.
The book features some of the popular images from his successful gallery show at the Galerie Daniel Maghen here in Paris.

So sticking with the theme of our furry friends we have a selection of books by David's unfurry friend, animal artist, Joe Weatherly.

JOE WEATHERLY: ANIMAL ESSENCE
HC 160pp Color, Black + White
Joe Weatherly
In contrast to David's favored technique of taking an animal's essence and exaggerating it to achieve amazing caricatures his friend Joe finds an animal's essence and seeks to represent that.
As such Joe is really a fine artist but in our store dedicated to genre illustration and its exponents we're happy to carry his books, of which this coffee table book of his art represents a trophy worthy of stuffing, mounting, whatever and putting on your bookshelf.

JOE WEATHERLY SKETCHBOOK
HC 108pp Color, Balck + White
Joe Weatherly
Like every artist Joe doesn't go anywhere without a sketchbook, which begs the question what are so many wild animals, dinosaur skeletons and nude people doing out and about in southern California, Joe?

JOE WEATHERLY: THE WEATHERLY GUIDE TO DRAWING ANIMALS
SC 166pp Black + White
Joe Weatherly
This is an indispensable instructional guide for the would be animal artist, but it isn't just a collection of dry exercises to hone your craft, it's full of exciting illustrations, over 900 of them.
Particularly good are Joe's studies of animal anatomy and skeletal construction.

OK having met Joe friend of David meet Michael Hampton friend of Joe, and like Joe an excellent instructor for grounding would be artists in the best way of approaching illustrating.

MICHAEL HAMPTON: FIGURE DRAWING DESIGN & INVENTION
SC 235pp Color, Black + White
Michael Hampton
Standing comparison to the wonderful series of instructional books by George Bridgman, Michael uses clean precise prose to accompany equally clean and crisp illustrations to explain the processes required to create realistic and representative images of the human form.
This book is so good it's little wonder that this book has become an online best seller for its author.

Let's change the mood, all these instructional books -  great though they be - are making us sound like a back to school shop, here comes some fun.

CHRIS SANDERS: KISSKALOO
SC 48pp Black + White
Chris Sanders
The mountain biking terror of Utah's hikers and fiendishly clever director of superb animation films, Chris Sanders fulfills a life long ambition by producing a comic strip.
Follow the adventures of naughty cyclopean cat, Ogo, and cute as pie Amerindian girl, Sesi as they seek to rescue 2007 from his January 1st 2008 demise and spy on Vampire neighbors.

RICHARD PETER HAN: SPROKET & GEAR
SC 60pp Color, Black + White
Richard Peter Han
Sprocket and Gear are the creation of gaming designer Peter Han, they're an oddball couple being a Cat and a Mouse, who share both the space of an inventor and his knack for designing and making stuff.
Pete's graphic designs are top notch, the book features an 18page color comic strip, as well as development art and character studies.

OP DE BEECK, SATO, GRIFFITH: FAMOUS CORPSES
HC 112pp Black + White
Art2books
Death, where is thy sting? The Reaper doesn't seem so grim in this collection  of wonderful caricatures by Jan Op De Beek - see you're laughing already - accompanying drawings by Emi Sato and hilarious text by the irreverent Danielle Griffith of famous folks recently departed.
We can be grateful the march of time overtook several of these characters both for the material they provide to this book but also because the world is that tiny bit better off without them.

JOE BLUHM: SKETCHINFECTUS
HC 80pp Color, Black + White
Art Squared
Multi talented Joe Bluhm can draw just about anything and he can shake up his style to suit the subject as required, he was getting pigeonholed as a caricature artist because he does them so well but he's does story boarding and aniamtion design as well!
Among the many reasons to be grateful to Joe is this neat package of 400 illustrations and yes many of them are caricatures, is beautifully produced and he was instrumental in getting Famous Corpses together.

PASCAL CAMPION: LITTLE BIG THINGS
SC 104pp Color
Brandstudio Press
That Pascal Campion is enjoying life is evident from the personal pieces reflecting the domestic bliss he has with his partner and their children and in his whimsical pieces which feature the cutest animals imaginable having some noisey fun.
How he finds time for the domestic bliss in these pictures beats us because he appears to be one of the busiest people in the animation and illustration business!
We have his earlier books and an impressive selection of prints by this master of form, light and color.
Pascal is like a modern Norman Rockwell given the feel good factor he invokes in the viewer.

GARY MONTALBANO: MEMORIES WITHIN DREAMS
SC 160pp Color, Black + White
Gary Montalbano
Imagine Roger Dean and Metal Hurlant's Philippe Caza collaborating on a science fiction fantasy project and you are some of the way to getting an idea of what Gary's work is like.
One could be forgiven for thinking Gary was one of the best designers in the business from back in the 80s he so assuredly illustrates in a retro futuristic style.
As a free lance designer Gary has worked for most of the major film and animation studios, one can't help thinking the design team behind the hugely successful and impressive looking Avatar had a copy or two of this book lying around the studio.

Fabian Molina: Animating In THE NUDE
HC 112pp Color, Black + White
Fabian Molina
Yeah don't expect a fancy bit of red wood when you buy this book; trying to find a nicer image of it proved beyond my usually limitless patience!
So gratuitous wood shot aside this is a great looking book by a very talented animator.
A book any aspiring animator able to read English should invest in, as Fabian shares his professional tips gleaned over hard years of trial and error so you can make immediate headway.
OK, so you may not get a nice bit of red wood with each book but you do get a signed copy complete with a neat little sketch!

DAVE WILKINS: EL ZOMBO
HC 80pp Color, Black + White
Dave Wilkins
We don't have any say over what artists chose to charge us for their lovingly crafted books and so there's no rhyme or reason to explain why a soft cover at 20 pages is more than a hard cover of 80.
Anyway I digress but this book is great value for money, super production values enhance 3 comic stories and scores of sketches by talented artists introducing us to the Mescal soaked world of teak tough zombie hombre, the superbly attired Lucha Libre, El Zombo!

NEW AT PULP'S ART: AUGUST 23

The good people of Udon Entertainment continue to bring the joy this summer - unlike the weather - with yet another fabulous new book; and yes I know I said to expect this book in January yet here it is!

MONSETR HUNTER ILLUSTRATIONS
SC 304pp Colr, Black + White
Udon Entertainment
Visual references to just about any and everything in this hugely popular fantasy game, the settings, the heroes, their armor and weapons and of course those monsters, are to be discovered in this hefty landscape format book, which also has some entertaining and insightful creator comments.

SONNY LIEW: MALINKY ROBOT
SC 128pp Color
Image Comics
Praise laden Sonny Liew has been nominated for an Eisner award and won both a Xeric-award and a Utopiales for this delightful science-fiction comic about two street urchins in a near future metropolis.

We also have Sonny Liew's delightful take on Disney's version of Lewis Carroll's Wonderland called - no surprise - Wonderland.

Rounding out today's new deliveries from the USA is a book from one of the nicest artists out there.

Chris Ayers: My Daily Zoo
SC 96pp Black + White
Design Studio Press
Concept artist Chris Ayers' previous books of animal caricatures, The Daily Zoo volumes 1 and 2, are among our best selling titles, each one being a collection of illustrations undertaken my Chris as a means of additional therapy while receiving treatment for leukemia.
His latest release is an activity book for children of all ages, wherein one can assist the artist by getting ones own hands dirty and finishing of a piece by filling in those gaps Chris has left gaping and gasping for our input and then coloring the whole thing, hours of fun, or days if you are slow or have a country or big company to run!

NB: A percentage from all My Daily Zoo sold will go to aid research into Cancer treatment.
Also, along with artist Joe Weatherly Chris will be having a gallery show here in Paris courtesy of our friends at Gallery Daniel Maghen, we'll ley you know exact dates once these are confirmed.

We carry virtually every book from Chris's publisher, Design Studio Press, DSP.
DSP have published a fine selection of books by professionals from concept and cgaracter design in animation, games and film effects, do call into Pulp's Art to find out just how good these books are.

MARVEL STUDIO'S CAPTAIN AMERICA HITS OUR SCREENS

While in San Diego between buying stuff for the Pulp's stores the team found time to catch the latest block buster from Marvel Studios, Captain America.

It was enjoyable, though the funny thing - from my perspective at least - was the film was at it's best when the characters were talking and not when they were running after, leaping over and punching stuff.
Maybe that had something to do with the extensive use of CG effects or the fact that the Red Skulls minions seemed decidedly hopeless, or perhaps the characters are simply well written and played.

Which ever, you can decide for yourself, but do remember to stay put for a neat post credits scene featuring the Avengers and that Pulp's Art has the art book for the film, while Pulp's Comics has all the Captain American stories you could want.

NEW AT PULP'S ART: AUGUST 17

Calling all enthusiasts of classic illustration you might want to note we've had some cracking new titles delivered this week.

FRED TARABA MASTERS OF AMERICAN ILLUSTRATION
HC 432pp Color, Black + White
The Illustrated Press
This much anticipated book by readers of Illustration magazine collects and enhances 41 articles Fred Taraba had published in the magazine Step by Step Graphics.
41 masters of conveying emotion, narrative, mood, pick the adjective of your choice, via illustration have their careers and technical approach considered by illustration historian and expert Fred Taraba.
Each of the illustrators featured is a genuine master but what makes this heavily illustrated book different is the absence of the more obvious choices like JC Leyendecker and Norman Rockwell but that's OK because we've books dedicated to these greats.

ILLUSTRATION # 34
SC 80pp Color, Black + White
The Illustrated Press
The extraordinarily talented Tom Lovell is given center stage in the latest issue of one of our favorite magazines.
After a long and successful career in illustration Tom, like may of his peers, headed west and painted fine art inspired by the indigenous tribes and the pioneers of the region.
The focus of this issue is his wonderful editorial illustrations which accompanied short stories in the many journals on US newsstands after WW II.

This issue has a touching tribute to the wonderful artist Jeffrey Catherine Jones whose life and career were an example of the importance of integrity to the true artist.

ALEX TOTH SETTING THE STANDARD
HC 416pp Color
Fantagraphics
As the title suggests comic artists didn't come better than Alex Toth, this book collects all his comic strip work from 1952 to 1954.
Both a wonderful slice of Americana because of Toth's ability to capture the essence of what he illustrated and some enjoyable comic stories from an age before troubled writers in need of treatment cropped up!

Know o' Prince that betwixt the sinking of Atlantis and August 18 hither came CONAN! A raver, a slayer and with hair by Teezy Weezy of Hollywood, hailing Princes and Princesses across Paris Conan the movie kicks off tomorrow August 17!

The trailer looks like fans of the sword and sorcery genre will be served up a generous helping of what they like best but oh my why on earth did the Hollywood producers give their glowering star an 80s vintage glam rocker's teased tresses, duh!?
Anyway his hair aside the Conan movie looks visually strong, and if heroic fantasy is your cup of mead then head over to rue Dante where the Pulp's stores carry a heady range of products you may like.

RYAN SOOK'S PRELIMINATI # 1

While at the San Diego Comic Con last month we selected a horde of fabulous artist's sketchbooks for Pulp's Art, now some of these are in store as I write, while others will be making an appearance soon.

Here's one we were very fortunate to get the last few copies available of its limited printing of just 500 copies.

RYAN SOOK: PRELIMINATI # 1
SC 24pp Color Balck + White
Ryan Sook
In this neat little package by the artist behind DC's Wednesday Comics Kamandi and cover artist for Top Cow's Magdalena you get a peek at the process employed by the artist to bring a concept to fruition as a finished piece of art, sketch book pages and unpublished commissions and if this weren't enough each of the books features an original sketch by Ryan on the back cover.
Ryan's profile is at odds with his talent in as much that you'll have heard far more about artists with half his ability.
We only have a few copies available and the earlier customers will be able to select the book with their favorite sketch on its back cover, cover images include head shots of Batgirl, Wonerwoman, Wolverine, Captain America, Batman, Superman, Supergirl and Black Cat.
