NEW AT PULP'S ART JULY 24

We've been announcing all sorts of things but now allow us to drop this week's arrivals gently onto your heads.

MODERN MASTERS # 28 ERIC POWELL
SC 120pp Color Black + White
Tomorrow Publishing
Eric is the artist and writer behind the phenomenally successful Goon, from Dark Horse and Delcourt, a highly amusing parody of the Pulp and Gothic genres and American Pop culture generally.
As with the previous MMs one gets a generous serving of Eric's art and an interview shedding light on his inspiration, process and world view.

Speaking of modern masters, Sergio Aragones also known as the fastest artist in comics has been honored by IDW with,

SEGIO ARAGONE'S GROO THE WANDERER ARTIST'S EDITION
HC 144pp Black + White
IDW
So by now you know an artist's edition is a faithful reproduction taken directly from the original art, just as the artist delivered it to the editor.
This latest edition sees the dim witted but highly motivated barbarian Groo getting himself and his canine buddy in and out of all sorts of scrapes.

Recently IDW announced some of their up coming releases in this prestigious series, including Gil Kane's Spider-man, the EC Mad and Mark Schultz Xenozoic Tales!

Enthusiasts wondering where Will Eisner's Spirit went, will have to wait for it to reappear on IDW's schedule. Apparently both tracking the originals and scanning at this size is a pains taking process so we'll need to be patient.

Meanwhile, the tremendous Wally Wood's EC Stories Artist's Edition is back in a new printing,

When I write "and now for something completely different", I'm hoping fans of the cult comedy show Monty Python's FCC don't imagine me at the keyboard waring nothing but a bow tie and a smile, mind it is hot in here today!

So anticipating the season of mellow fruitfulness is this collection of pretty girls from Korea's top artists, images range from the cute as pie to the sort of starlet in a skimpy costume from American Pie.

MODERN MASTERS # 28 ERIC POWELL
SC 120pp Couleur Noir et Blanc
Tomorrow Publishing

SEGIO ARAGONE'S GROO THE WANDERER ARTIST'S EDITION
HC 144pp Noir et Blanc
IDW

ON LINE SHOPPING & MORE FROM PULP'S ART

Finally we have a site from which customers living far away can order books from Pulp's Art.
Currently the site is in French & English but the hope is to have it in Spanish as well very soon.

Simply go to ,

and you are good to go.
You will probably note that the site doesn't list all the titles available in the store, we're concentrating on the hard to find artist's own sketch books and domestic French art books.
We will be updating the site regularly but if you want a book listed on our blog, or which you think we may have in stock but which we haven't put on the internet site then please contact us and we will arrange this for you.

Other news, we've been asked to mention those artists whose books we expect to receive post the SDCC. I mentioned yesterday those I packed up personally which should arrive very soon but I am also in contact with artists and arranging delivery of books from Humberto Ramos, Francisco Herrera, David Colman, Joe Weatherly, Sean Cheeks Galloway, Ryan Benjamin, Paul Wee, Paul Bonner, Eric Canete, Matteo Scalera and Ryan Ottley.

In addition we should have books from Arthur Adams, Mark Brooks, Pascal Campion and we sincerely hope to have two new books from J Scott Campbell which will blow you away!

The ever popular Adam Hughes wasn't at this year's SDCC, he diligently stayed at his drawing board to finish various commitments but his lovely wife Alsion and her helpful colleagues did say there will be a sketch book from Adam available later in the year, yay!

BACK FROM COMIC CON

Hello readers, I'm not long off the train from the UK where they're sort of gearing up for the Olympics, following a short stop in the home country after the San Diego Comic Con, SDCC.

(Honestly Paris you should be relieved yours isn't the dubious honor of hosting the stupendously arrogant IOC and their over priced marketing event!
The average Londoner is paying far to high a price in terms of tax and disruption to experience any kind of fell good factor. )

As ever the SDCC was a mixed blessing, the effort of getting there and the hassle of moving about a space filled with tens of thousands of fans moving at the speed of grazing herbivores is exhausting, while the thrill of encountering brilliant creative talent is positively exhilarating.
Ultimately I always conclude I've been fortunate to attend, I catch up with old friends in the communities of comics, animation and the making of images and art, while hoping I've also made some new ones.

In the coming weeks we'll be receiving some of the sketch books I secured for Pulp's Art from top creators in the field of animation and comics such as Arthur Adams, Terry Dodson, Dustin Nguyen, Andrew Robinson, Alex Ross, Tim Sale, Chris Sanders, Bill Sienkiewicz and Michael Turner.
Later on down the line in August we'll have even more books as a result of our efforts at this year's SDCC and towards the end of the month or in early September we'll be debuting a line of art books we've published with our friends at Brandstudio Press and Trinquétte!

(We'd be delighted to hear from any professional artists from the field of games, comics or animation, with a pop culture sensibility, interested in working with us on art books produced to a very high standard.)

In closing this brief message I'd like to thank Adnan for holding the fort in my absense and for updating the Blog.
Fans of great art should make a bee line to the store to pick up the fabulous recent arrivals he announced, covering three amazing and important talents, John Buscema, Richard Corben and Jack Davis!

News at Pulp's Art July 17

Jack Davis: Drawing American Pop Culture: a Career Retrospective

HC 192pp Color Black + White
Fantagraphics Books

Jack Davis began his career working for EC Comics, contributing to almost all their series, horror to science fiction, but he's most known for his career as a Mad Magazine artist, which he helped to launch.
His use of the brush to create depth and mood was unique and memorable. His wrinkled clothing, scratchy lines and multi-layered layouts were so popular in the 1950s, that other artists at rival companies began copying the style.
Jack worked also a lot for advertising and all sorts of magazines, to name the most known Time magazine, TV Guide, Pepsi, Nestlé and many others.
He produced the artwork for a lot of Movies posters.
Enjoy this amazing career retrospective of one of the greatest american cartoonist.

HC 320pp Color Black + White
Dark Horse

A welcome rave from the grave, as everything the incomparable Richard Corben ever did for publisher Jim Warren aka Uncle Creepy and Cousin Eerie, including covers and front pieces, is interred in this great book.
Richard remains arguably the horror fans favorite artist, he employed incredibles techniques to bring to life characters in stories of gothic dread by masters of the genre like Lovecraft and Poe as well as those by Warren regulars Bruce Jones and Bill Dubay.

GETTING JULY STARTED

Hello everybody, this week sees the annual explosion of fun and frolics which is the combined Japan Expo and Paris Comic Con, there are so many great guests and events to enjoy that I can't mention them all here but I will say Pulp's will have a stand featuring graphic novels and art books.
It's worth the price of admission and the soulless experience of boarding the RER B to reach it and at least on the way back you can enjoy the amazed expression of arriving tourists and home going locals to a mass of Sailor Moon Girls boarding the train at Parc des Expositions, ALLEZ!

So to this week's arrivals, let's kick off with a man from over here doing very well over there, why it's..

PASCAL CAMPION SUNNY SIDE
SC 144pp Color
CFSL Ankama
Pascal is from Alsace but he's making a successful living in San Francisco working for the leading US animation studios and free lancing in illustration.
We've been selling his self published art books and prints here at Pulp's Art for a while and always suspected a major publisher here would eventually get around to releasing a book of his joyous art and so it happened.
Pascal captures the cutest critters and tender scenes from what is clearly his wonderful life in simple but stunningly effective images, with a wonderful sense of color and design.

Sticking with the theme of artists from here doing well over there, classic BD doesn't come better than this:-

ALEX ALICE SIEGFRIED BOOK 1
HC 144pp Color Balck + White
Archaia Enteratinment
I imagine these are exciting times for Alex Alice, he recently become a farther, he's recently brought his stunning interpretation of the Teutonic/Wagnerian legend, Siegfried, to a critically and commercially successful conclusion and he's just won a Spectrum Gold Medal in Comics for his cover to the third and final volume of this Siegfried series for Dargaud.

This English edition reprints and resizes the original Dargaud deluxe edition of volume 1 but without the DVD of animated footage.
We have stocked the French edition for a while because we wanted to have a small representative selection of the best in BD for those tourists who felt they couldn't wade through the literally thousand stocked by our neighbors specializing in BD.
Given the deluxe original is out of print we thought we'd bring in this edition because the extra material is a fabulous blend of what drew Alex to this story and what inspired and informed his vision, as well as stunning development work from Alex and his collaborators.

BTW Alex Alice is one of the talents I didn't mention earlier who will be attending the Paris Comic Con, ALLEZ encore!

Again to meet the demand of foreign customers looking for excellence in BD but maybe wanting to do more than simply look at the pictures, we are now carrying Dark Horse's excellent repackaging of the first three stories of feline super sleuth Blacksad, by the incomparable draftsman Juanjo Guarnido.

ART OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN VAMPIRE HUNTER

Aspen MLT Inc.
A return to the days when Presidents and the GOP did more then just genuflect to Wall Street, though I remain doubtful the deservedly revered Mr Lincoln found time to save the Union, emancipate America's slaves and kill Vampires!
This book features development art, story boards and heaps of behind the scenes goodness from this crazed but welcome fantasy film from Wanted director, Timur Bekmambetov and featuring every bodies - with the exception of some very mean spirited fanatics - favorite President, # 16 Abraham Lincoln.

Tired of looking at books face front, then how about I do this.

DIGITAL ART MASTERS # 7
SC 320pp Color Black + White
Total 3D Publishing
OK you probably know by now what to expect here, stunning digital art from precocious talents not afraid to let you in on their secrets for creating this sort of stuff.
These are tremendously well produced books, nice to the touch and lovely to look at.

Those of you who weren't able to attend our book signing here last Saturday with sensational Korean artist, Kim Jung-Gi, missed a spell binding treat.
Here are some images from the afternoon, when we hope between our efforts and the talent of Kim we were able to make some clients very happy.

Don't be too down cast, you can still buy Kim's incredible 2011 sketchbook and  hopefully Kim will return to these shores soon.
Indeed, possibly as early as next January, when hopefully Glenat will be ready to release a super charged BD written by Jean-David Morvan and drawn by Kim, it's in the works, we'll keep you posted!

ALEX ALICE SIEGFRIED BOOK 1
HC 144pp Couleur Noir et Blanc
Archaia Enteratinment
