San Diego Sketchbooks Part 1

I'm nearly out of the door and off on a week's vacation but I just had to let you know about these two new arrivals, clearly the # 5 is this week's bonus #!

TERRY DODSON BOMBSHELLS # 5
SC 16pp Color Black + White
Terry Dodson
A gorgeous little book of top Marvel artist Terry's commissions and development work over the last year.
Terry is currently one of the best artist for good girl art in the business.

CHRIS SANDERS SKETCHBOOK # 5
SC 48pp Color Black + White
Chris Sanders
Another book of exquisite art from one of animation's greats, Chris has directed some of the best films of the last few years including Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon.
This book is filled with cute little furry things and even cuter girls bearing Chris's hallmark enhanced leg strength and peripheral vision !

Another # 5 you'll find in the store very soon is pin-up master Dean Yeagle's Scribblings # 5.

We also have display copies of J Scott Campbell's White Hot and MARVELous Art, you can request we reserve copies of these books for you once our stock arrives with just a small deposit.
You can also reserve copies of the new books from Humberto Ramos, the eagerly awaited Fairy Quest graphic novel and the latest art book from his good friend Francisco Herrera, Magic Box.

PULP'S ART NEWS JUNE 28

The San Diego Comic Con passed all too quickly but we did have the opportunity to meet with a host of top creators and purchase their latest books for Pulp's Art.
As I write books from these artists below are making their way to us here in Paris, look for them in the coming weeks,
Ryan Benjamin, Jose Lopez, J Scott Campbell, Fabian Molina, Phil Noto, Frank Cho, Terry Dodson, Dean Yeagle, Humberto Ramos, Francisco Herrera, Sean Galloway, Arthur Adams, Mike Mignola, Brandon Peterson, David Colman, Jonboy Meyers, Joe Blum, Richard Han, Simone Bianchi and Chris Sanders.

I had a wee bit of room in my case and since it isn't too heavy I brought back some of Adam Hughes' latest book.

ADAM HUGHES: FAUST IMPRESSIONS
SC 24pp Color
Adam Hughes
This year's collection from the incomparable Mr Hughes is already collecting healthy bids on EBay, possibly because he's introduced some color instead of it being black, white and gray tone or maybe just because it's once again a great collection of fabulous art featuring gorgeous girls.
We still have examples of Adam's previous sketchbooks and if you have interest then we advise picking these up at your earliest opportunity as these are printed in limited quantities and once they're gone they're solid gone!

On the subject of great good girl art Pulp's Art is delighted to offer:-

DAVE STEVENS COMPLETE SKETCHES & STUDIES
HC 256pp Color Black + White
IDW
Few artist captured the curvy charm of the voluptuous woman as well as the late Dave Stevens.
IDW have collected all his self published sketchbooks in this one outstanding volume, a poignant reminder of his legacy and what we're missing with his premature passing.

The appreciation of the female form being endemic it's hardly surprising that this book has gone back to press.

J. SCOTT CAMPBELL'S DANGER GIRL SKETCHBOOK
HC 64pp Color Balck + White
IDW
This latest printing of J Scott Campbell's sketchbook based on his popular sexy espionage series, is beefed up into a larger format and given a good stiff cover.
J. Scott Campbell ranks as one of our best selling artists and looking at the good girl art in this book it's easy to see why!

VALKYRIE CHRONICLES DESIGN ARCHIVE
SC 400pp Color Black + White
Udon Entertainment
Once over the hurdle that a decidedly Teutonic sounding cast is fighting to actually stop a country being overrun by a military juggernaut, you can enjoy the design work for characters and setting from Sega's game of war and tactics.

JOE MADUREIRA ART OF DARKSIDERS
SC 288pp Color Balck + White
Udon Entertainment
Not a new book but after a few months absence it's very nice to see this book of Joe Madureira's development art for this dark fantasy cg back in print and back in stock.

ART OF CARS 2
HC 160pp Color Balck + White
Chronicle Books
It doesn't necessarily follow that a great looking animated feature makes for a great Art of book, OK it's down to personal taste but I was distinctly underwhelmed with the book of a certain title while still thinking of it as Pixar's finest cinematic hour or two.
By contrast I wasn't too enamored of Cars the film but it did make for a very good looking Art of and so while personally I would have wanted just about any Pixar film to have a sequel before this exercise in parting parents from their money we still have a good looking art book to accompany the film.
(To finish on a positive note the trailer for Pixar's next animated feature, Brave, looks amazing and so does the art from the film posted on the net and I'm expecting both the film and it's Art of book to look superb.)

ART OF CAPTAIN AMERICA
HC 240pp Color Black + White
Marvel Comics
For those fans who can't wait for next summer's super sized block buster The Avengers this film of the good Captain's origins is a good way of whiling away the time and this book to accompany the film is also a pleasing way to pass an hour or two on each viewing, discovering how the designers realized the look for this film's characters, props and settings.
The chapters exploring the development of the film's principals Captain America and the Red Skull are particularly pleasing.

MARVEL ART OF MIKE DEODATO JR
HC 240pp Color Balck + White
Marvel Comics
Following on from the volumes devoted to Marko Djurdjevic and Joe Quesada this latest book to explore the career at Marvel of a major artist concerns its self with the Brazilian titan Mike Deodato.
Deodato has everything super hero comics require, his designs are bold, sensual and vigorous, his sequencing dynamic and dramatic.
The book features covers, individual and sequential panels and sketches, good fun.

I'm taking a break from the store next week but given I'm a minor attraction when compared to the great books we stock do make a point of calling in to Pulp's Art to see what's new.

NEWS FROM PULPS ART JUNE 13

So we did get in quite a few books this week but would one call them new if they are new to the store yet aren't exactly hot of the press, hmm?
Among these books were several Disney editions including Brother Bear: A Transformation Tale and no it isn't about Robots which become shopping trolleys or whatever but about early Amerindians; and the fantastic Art of Bolt and the making of Prince of Persia.

Ah now here's one you might not have seen before:-

JIM SILKE: NUDE
The Job of Figure Drawing
SC 108pp Color B+W
Dark Horse
Figure drawing it's a tough job but somebodies got to do it and few are as well qualified as master pin up artist, Jim Silke.
Jim shares reflections on the subject of glamour illustration informed by a long and successful career, as well featuring some of his best work there's a selection of illustrations by some of the greatest names in the field.

(We have a nice range of Jim's books from Dark Horse and Flesk Publications in our Glamour and Pin-Up section in the store.)

CFSL SHUFFLE # 5 CHARACTER DESIGN
SC 128pp Color B+W
CFSL INK ANKAMA
Anyone visiting Pulp's Art will know we really love the books Ankama and Cafe Sale put together.
The latest in this nicely produced and eminently affordable range of pocket books features a great mix of artists and styles exploring the theme of designing characters.

BLACK FROG: DYNAMO
SC 102pp Color B+W
Ankama
A terrific showcase of what the fiendishly talented Black Frog, or Grenouille Noire to use his nom de guerre has been doing with his time - none of it ever spent idle - lately.
This landscape, or Italian if you prefer, formatted book has comic strips, sketches and designs from this ace artist.

Hey # 6
SC 143pp Color B+W
Ankama
HEY! WHAT? Well it's another issue of the bilingual pop culture publication is what HEY is.
Crammed as always with art from the low brow, angry edgy end of the fine art spectrum, and mixing graphics with the plastic arts from across the globe, Hey holds it's own along side Juxtapoz and Hi-Fructose.
A high light of the latest issue is a specially commissioned series of illustrations from the inspired Argentine artist, Carlos Nine.

He drinks and he draws like some urban barbarian, it's LA artist Dan Panosian, who with his lovely wife dropped by Pulp's Art  and was kind enough to sign copies of his sketchbook "Urban Barbarian" and draw a doodle or two into a few copies of "Drink 'N' Draw".
Dan's great art is concealed within his sketchbook, the cover of which resembles the label for a certain celebrated beverage from Tennessee; you have to open it up and take a look to get the picture, so to speak!

Next week I'll be heading to the San Diego Comic Convention, it's an opportunity to meet old friends and hopefully make some new ones and also to research and select new products for Pulp's Art.
While I'm away we should receive the Art of Captain America the companion volume to both the new film and the previous books featuring the art and designs for Iron Man 1 & 2 and Thor.
At the risk of sinking the boat I'll also announce three books from a Singapore based artists' studio we hope to have towards the end of next week.

NEWS FROM PULP'S ART JULY 6

Phew, thanks to all of you who dropped by our stand at the Japan Expo/Paris Comic Con which concluded on Sunday.
Later this month we'll be heading out to the "daddy" of comic cons, as July 20 sees the San Diego Comic Con kick off, America's biggest pop culture event.
You can be sure we'll be heading home with some great new titles, along with the soar feet and weary expressions!

Which brings me round to what's new here at Pulp's Art,

ERIC CANETE: CHOCLATE
SC 66pp Black + White
Essential Sequential
Eric's day job is in animation designing all sorts of stuff but occasionally he makes a foray into the world of comics.
This is another collection of private commissions and illustrations Eric has under taken in the past year.
Eric's style is very distinctive, he combines elegance and dynamism to refresh familiar characters and subjects, if you don't know his work we enthusiastically  recommend you take a look.

( Choclate is dedicated to the memory of Eric's friend Clement Sauve.)

TIM SALE: HARDEDGE
SC 62pp Black + White
Essential Sequential
A collection of commissions for lucky fans and drawings which Tim has made in the last couple of years.
Atmospheric and stylish images in pen and gauche of brooding heroes, smoldering women and malevolent villains.

These two sketchbooks are published by Essential Sequential, we stock all their sketchbooks which include collected drawings by Mindy Lee, Dave Johnson, Dan Panosian and Andrew Robinson.

Now too often when I mention a specific title as coming soon it then doesn't, for instance I said Monster Hunter was coming soon and I'am now told to expect it in January!
Still it'll be worth the wait and I've learnt my lesson no more tempting fate by announcing a title as imminent!
However when I said we'd have Alice Madness Returns in stock this week I wasn't mistaken, this artbook for the popular gothic fantasy computer game is indeed here and looks great.... well a bit weird actually but it's certain to be popular.

Coming soon...... some new books OK!
