NEW AT PULP'S ART, PLUS ROBERT VALLEY IN PARIS.

Sorry but last week there just wasn't too much to report in the way of new titles and I've been out of the store arranging foreign deliveries to fellow book sellers in the UK and US.
As it is this sort of work is continuing as I prepare books for the fast approaching Ficomic show in Barcelona May 3rd to 6th, doors open at 10.00 AM and if you are reading this is Spain why not come and see us at:-

So to the new titles this week and sorry Mr Taliban but strong and alluring women seem to be the order of the day but don't get your beard in too much of a twist because there's also a cautionary tale of life lived to the limit and beyond by animation ace Robert Valley.

Here's a book we've been waiting on for a while and so while I'm somewhat inevitably writing about the wait having been worth it, sincerely it really has been,

Just as the cover art of Roberts Maguire and McGinis were a necessary ingredient in the success of a publication for many US paperback publishers so to were José Luiz Benicio's covers for the publishers of bare knuckled adventure and steaming passion in Brazil.

Benicio's work fizzes with the zest and vitality one would expect from a hot blooded latin and like Maguire and McGinis the images are beautifully constructed. 

Most of the pieces reproduced in this first collection, in a proposed series, feature his work for the ZZ7 imprint, particularly his stunning work for the adventures of sultry spy Brigitte Montfort.

Companion books could follow thick and fast given Benicio has been illustrating professionally for nearly 60 years, in just about every field of commercial illustration, from books and journals to movie posters.

OK we stick with the theme of retro espionage as we welcome aboard the good ship Pulp's Art the latest release from Kevin Dart and the Fleet Street Scandal crew.

Animation professionals Elizabeth Ito writes while Kevin Dart draws the adventures of the sexy super spy of the swinging sixties, Yuki 7.

We first met Yuki in Seductive Espoinage: The World of Yuki 7, Fleet Street Scandal's previous tome and a tribute to the aesthetic of the 60s spy movies such as James Bond, Our Man Flint - with their wonderful poster art by the likes of Robert McGinis, Frank C McCarthy and Bob Peck - and their TV cousins Man from Uncle, etc..

This time around Liz is writing adventure stories pitting Yuki and her pals, the Gadget Girls, against lethal Lotharios and power crazed super villains hoping to rule the world - we call these fund managers and traders where I'm from - all illustrated by Kevin Dart with some gifted friends chipping in.

If 72 pages of witty fun filled action wasn't enough there's a DVD attached with a short animated film, a wee trailer and more goodies!

OMAR DOGAN'S GIRL 7

They could almost be the Gadget Girls but it's Omar Dogan's own magnificent seven, a cute group of girls playing around at sports, martial arts, and dressing up and down it all sorts of outfits from the Gothic to the scanty, no burkas though!

Oh dear the style police are going to come after me because having compared Benicio to Maguire and McGinis I'm back making an easy - though yet again appropriate - comparison to make my case, but this book of art from Japan's leading on line artistic community, that'd be Pixiv, is very like the wonderful books from Cafe Sale, which is France's leading on line artistic community.

And so as with the CFSL art books you get in the Pixiv Almanac a nice array of styles and subjects for your viewing pleasure but on this occasion brilliantly illustrated by Japan's leading artists.

A collection of covers, strips and unpublished art by the Spanish artist of DC's Gotham City Sirens, Guillem March.

Guillem clearly loves drawing the ladies which explains the assignments from Playboy and the very cheeky Eros Comix.

Doh! If it's not a comparison it's a damn cliche what's up with me this week?

Oh to heck with it because this over worked phrase "unique style " really could have been coined for the original way animation artist Robert Valley draws, he uses a perspective that elongates and curves like some fish eyed telescopic lens to dramatic effect and like nothing you've seen elsewhere.

This Thursday Diane and Jean-Jacques of the Arludik gallery will be hosting Robert and Jorden Oliwa aka Johnny Gonzo for the opening of an exhibition of their art, Robert will also be debuting his new book Massive Swerve # 4, subtitled Pear Cider & Cigarettes and there'll be a screening of his short film of the same name.

Robert has worked on several of the Gorillaz animated rock videos and the rightly celebrated animated clip for the game Beatles Rock Band.

If his talent as an animator and illustrator weren't enough, he's also an excellent story teller as the latest Massive Swerve makes clear.

Pear Cider and Cigarettes, Massive Swerve # 4 remember, is the story of Techno, an amiable  charmer with a compulsive streak looking to live his life to the fullest who tips into excess and self destruction.

The book begins with the two page text of the story, an unvarnished account in sober unsentimental terms of Techno's trajectory towards almost inevitable tragedy and Robert's association with him.

What follows is Robert's interpretation of the text, the imagery is evocative and powerful, brilliantly staged and sequenced and ideally suited to the laconic language Robert uses to ensure the story doesn't descend into melodrama. 

Being self published this may not get the attention it deserves but I'm hoping the Eisner judges get to hear about it as this is the comics medium at its best, a pitch perfect marriage, harmony, synthesis - take your pick - of words and pictures.

N.B. Massive Swerve will be available from us on Friday, the book will premiere at the official opening of the Arludik's expo this Thursday evening, when you can meet Robert and Jorden in person.

Voici donc les nouveaux titres de cette semaine et desole Mr Taliban mais les femmes attirantes et fortes semblent être à l'ordre du jour mais ne soyez pas trop nerveux car il y a aussi une histoire sur la vie vecue jusqu'aux limites et au-delà par l'animateur Robert Valley.

Voila un livre que nous attendions depuis tres longtemps et cela valait vraiment le coup, sincerement,

Tout comme les couvertures de Robert Maguire et Robert McGinis etaient un ingredient necessaire au succes de nombreux editeurs Americains de romans de gares, les couvertures de José Luiz Benicio ont beaucoup fait pour les editeurs d'aventures musclées remplies de passions torrides au Bresil.

Le travail de Benicio est empli de l'energie et vitalité que l'on peut esperer d'un latin au sang chaud et comme Maguire et McGinis ses illustrations sont magnifiquement construites.

La plupart des illustrations reproduites dans ce premier recueil sont tirées des editions ZZ7, particulièrement son incroyable travail pour les aventures de la sulfureuse espionne Brigitte Montfort.

De nombreux autres recueils devraient être rapidement disponibles etant donné que Benicio est illustrateur professionnel depuis presque 60 ans, dans quasiment tous les types d'illustrations commerciales, des couvertures de livres , des journeaux jusqu'aux affiches de films.

Un recueil de couvertures, bandes dessinées et illustrations inedites par l'artiste Espagnol Guillerm March travaillant pour DC Comics sur Gotham City Sirens où plus recemment sur Catwoman.

Guillerm aime clairement dessiner les femmes ce qui explique tous ses travaux pour Playboy et pour Eros Comix.

L'expression "style unique" convient parfaitement à la manière originale qu'a Robert Valley de dessiner, il utilise une perspective qui allonge et courbe comme le ferait une lentille telescopique oeil de poisson pour dramatiser les effets.   

Ce jeudi Diane et Jean-Jacques de la galerie Arludik recevront Robert et Jorden Oliwa aka Johnny Gonzo pour le vernissage de leurs expositions conjointes, Robert proposera egalement son dernier livre Massive Swerve # 4, Pear Cider & Cigarettes accompagné d'un court metrage d'animation d'un film du même titre.

Robert a travaillé sur de nombreux clips de Gorillaz et le celebre clip animé pour le jeu Beatles Rock Band. 

Et si ses talents comme animateur et illustrateur n'etaient pas suffisant, il est egalement un excellent dessinateur de comics comme le prouve le dernier volume de Massive Swerve.

Pear Cider and Cigarettes, Massive Swerve # 4 raconte l'histoire de Techno, un aimable charmeur avec une tendance compulsive à vivre sa vie à fond au point de se perdre dans tous sortes d'exces et une auto destruction.

Le livre commence avec deux pages de texte ou on apprend l'histoire de Techno et sa rencontre avec Robert.

Ce qui suit est l'interpretation de ce texte par Robert, l'imagerie est evocative et puissante, brillamment mise en scene et  convenant ideallement au language laconique que Robert utilise pour être sur que l'histoire ne tombe pas dans le melodramatique. 

Etant auto publié ce comics peut ne pas recevoir l'attention qu'il merite mais esperant que les juges des Eisner Awards en entendent parler car voila un parfait mariage de mots et d'images.
